Research Interests
I am originally from Eritrea in East Africa and bring a global perspective to my research at the intersection of veterinary public health and translational toxicology. I earned my Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from the United Arab Emirates University, followed by a year of clinical training at the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest.
Currently, I am a dual MPVM/PhD student at the University of California, Davis, pursuing both the Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) and a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology. My research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial drug residues in waste milk from California dairies. I am particularly interested in how on-farm drug use and milk management practices contribute to the emergence and spread of AMR, with the goal of advancing antimicrobial stewardship in food-producing animal systems.
My broader research interests include food safety, drug metabolism, toxicologically relevant environmental contaminants and One Health, with an emphasis on reducing public health risks associated with antimicrobial use in agriculture. Long term, I aim to contribute to evidence-based policies and sustainable drug-use strategies that address the global AMR crisis.
Outside of research, I enjoy playing chess, exploring new destinations, and learning new languages currently focusing on Spanish.
