Dr. Emmanuel Okello leads the Livestock Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at UC Davis, which promotes responsible antimicrobial use in California livestock systems, including dairy, beef cattle, small ruminants, pigs, and poultry. His research focuses on antimicrobial drug use and resistance in livestock, with a strong emphasis on applied solutions to safeguard animal and public health.
Dr. Okello’s work has advanced understanding of antimicrobial resistance transmission dynamics and the drivers of drug use in animal agriculture. His broader research interests include the discovery of novel antimicrobials, alternatives to antibiotics, and the development of rapid diagnostic tools for livestock diseases.
He has served on several professional and policy advisory groups, including the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Expert Work Group on Antimicrobial Stewardship and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance. He is a member and former president of the USDA-NIFA Multistate Research Project on Antimicrobial Resistance and contributes to global One Health initiatives through the Africa One Health University Network.
Dr. Okello holds a DVM from Makerere University (Uganda), a master’s degree in Molecular Biology from the Catholic University of Leuven, and a PhD in Bio-Engineering Sciences from the Free University of Brussels. He completed postdoctoral training in epidemiology at UC Davis before joining the faculty.
